Susan Bastian, MEd, EdS

Senior Associate Director of Design, Emeritus

Driven by a passion for creating order out of chaos, Susan has helped shape many processes related to Instructional Design at Emeritus. Her experience includes two decades of teaching science and technology in the K-12 arena, instructing teachers in the application of research-backed methods for science instruction, and more than seven years working in the instructional design field at several New England universities. Susan holds a Terminal Degree in Curriculum and Instruction as well as a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology.

Traci Roth, MEd, BA

Senior Associate Director of Design, Emeritus

At Emeritus, Traci Roth has developed a variety of online executive education courses, oversees teams of instructional designers, and interacts with partner schools. Traci started her career in K-12, teaching elementary school and developing district-level curriculum. After earning her Master's in Education and Staff Development, she worked for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as a Curriculum and Technology Staff Development Specialist, partnering with teachers in 35 school districts and 40 public libraries to help integrate technology into the curriculum and align it with state and national standards. During that time, she started developing and teaching online and blended learning experiences for the grants she was working under and for PBS TeachLine. After several years in this role, she moved into higher education full-time, teaching master of education courses online and working as an instructional designer for master and doctoral programs.

Brook Corwin, MA, BA

Senior Associate Director of Design, Emeritus

Brook Corwin has worked directly with university faculty to design, deliver, and support fully online, asynchronous courses since 2010, with a focus on integrating instructional technology with pedagogically-sound instructional design. As both a designer and director managing teams of designers, Brook has worked on a variety of program types including graduate degrees, professional certificates, and continuing ed credentials. He began his design career at the University of North Carolina Greensboro and then North Carolina State University, collaborating with teams of software developers, graphic designers, and production specialists to develop programs in-house. He then moved into the Online Program Management (OPM) sector to collaborate with faculty and designers at more than a dozen partner institutions. His work at OPMs includes collaboration with product, delivery, and marketing teams to improve the learner experience in each phase of the enrollment cycle. Brook Holds an MA in Interactive Media from Elon University and a BA in History and Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Nolan Williams, MS

Associate Director of Design, Emeritus

Nolan Williams started his career teaching and developing curriculum and behavioral intervention plans for children with developmental disabilities and Autism Spectrum diagnoses. He earned a B.S. in Psychology from Morehead State University and a Master's in Experimental Psychology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Nolan has worked as an instructional designer in a variety of settings, including autism treatment facilities, universities, and as a consultant. Nolan began working at Emeritus in the summer of 2020, and currently works as an Associate Director of Learning, Learning Excellence. Since coming to Emeritus, Nolan has developed multiple online programs to help career switchers seeking to transition to careers in user experience design, digital marketing, and instructional design. He has also developed and helped develop several internal staff trainings and professional development opportunities. In his free time he enjoys throwing darts, a wide array of outdoor adventures, hanging out with his dog Oggy, and reading. Nolan also has the wanderlust and moves around the United States frequently, though he currently reside in Louisville Metro area in Kentucky.

Tina Houareau is an Associate Director of Learning Excellence on the Global Design team. Prior to joining Emeritus, she created and managed an eLearning team that was responsible for transforming instructor-led training to the online platform through the adoption of industry-leading technology at Optum360, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, designed high-impact programs at Thomson Reuters and implemented course revision strategies aimed at improving overall learner performance and increasing revenue for the Legal, Tax and Accounting business groups, and designed accredited, competency based education courses at Capella University. Tina also supported the DEI office in conducting research and studying data related to factors that negatively affect the academic performance of minority students. Tina earned her PhD in Education with a specialization in Instructional Design for Online Learning from Capella. She completed her MA in English from Kansas State University and earned her BA, also in English, from Goldsmiths College, University of London. Tina is originally from the Seychelles islands and currently resides with her family in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Adam Santone, PhD

Associate Director of Design, Emeritus

Adam Santone is an instructional designer who specializes in programming and technical courses. He has over a decade of professional experience in education, with expertise in educational technology, interactive computer graphics, plant science, and data analysis. Prior to joining Emeritus, he worked at MIT, where he designed and delivered data science curriculum for professional learners in Uruguay. He also led statewide teacher professional development programs related to 3D printing, short-format documentary videos, and ecology at Florida State University. In addition, he has been heavily involved in STEM outreach, including synthetic biology programs with BioBuilder.org and space life science outreach with NASA. He holds a PhD in Technology from Purdue University.

Phylise Banner is an Associate Director of Design and Team Lead at Emeritus. A pioneer in online learning, Phylise has over 25 years of experience designing, developing, and delivering learning experiences and managing teams. Throughout her career, she has partnered with thousands of faculty members and subject matter experts across multiple disciplines to translate educational and industry concepts into transformative learning experiences.

Hector Valle, MA

Associate Director of Design, Emeritus

Hector Valle is an Associate Director of Instructional Design and Team Lead for short-form certificates at Emeritus. He has over 15 years of experience in instructional design and served as the Director of Instructional Resources and Training at Daytona State College. Hector is a techno-nerd, drone pilot, videographer, and nature lover. Inspiration and learning are his passions. He was the 2021 recipient of the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Teaching Excellence award. Hector holds an MA in Instructional Design and Technology from the University of Central Florida.

Mazzy Hasan is a veteran learning designer, design thinker, professional development trainer, and video producer who enjoys designing and developing engaging and dynamic learning materials/spaces for online, classroom, and blended learning. Prior to joining Emeritus, he served as Chief Learning Architect of learning design company upnextLAB Pte Ltd. (Singapore) . He also served as the Deputy Director & Head of Content Development at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, heading the development of Flipped Classroom learning materials and resources in cooperation with Imperial College London, UK, delivered through the Team-based learning approach.

Fan Yang is has an Associate Director of Learning at Emeritus. She earned her PhD in Learning Design and Technology from University of Hawaii at Manoa. Fan Yang had a diverse career path before becoming an instructional designer. She loves being an instructional designer for the opportunities to work with subject matter experts in different fields and create best-fit learning experiences for unique learners. She is especially passionate about making learning experiences not only effective but also fun. In her spare time, she takes delight in learning new technologies and playing video games. If she ever switches her career again in the future, she wants to become an indie game developer.

Fueled by the desire to create a less violent and more hospitable world for all and a belief in the transformative power of education, Kimberly has devoted her life to creating accessible learning opportunities. Throughout her career as a faculty member, instructional designer, learning management system administrator, university administrator, and school board member, she has utilized her expertise in communication, technology, and the learning sciences to build and support highly effective and efficient courses and programs. At Emeritus, Kimberly serves as an Associate Director of Design and leads a team of designers on the Global Design team. Kimberly earned a BA and MA in interpersonal and public communication from Bowling Green State University and a Ph.D. in communication studies from The Ohio State University.

Elaine Sequeira serves as a senior manager on the Design team at Emeritus. Elaine has over 16 years of experience in creating, designing, and delivering content across e-learning and technical writing. Her experience ranges from creating help files for mobiles and other electronic items to creating learning material for a hotel management course. She holds Bachelors’ Degrees in English Literature and Psychology and is a Postgraduate in Instructional Design. In addition, she holds a Post-Graduate Diploma in Leadership and a Diploma in Negotiation and Influence.

Anita Mendonca, MA, MEd

Senior Manager of Design, Emeritus

Anita Mendonca leads a team of instructional designers and LMS experts at Emeritus. Her more than 15 years of experience in education includes teaching as well as curriculum and instructional design with NGOs, schools, and corporations. She also has experience in the e-learning space, creating content for K-12, corporate training, vocational training, professional training, sports for development, and life skills¾childhood to livelihood. Throughout her career, she has partnered and collaborated with faculty members, subject matter experts, and graphic designers to create enduring training modules and fulfill learner requirements. Anita holds a Master of Arts from Pune University and Master of Education from Mumbai University. She also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Instructional Design from Symbiosis.

Subroto Mukherjee is as a Senior Manager of Design at Emeritus. Throughout his journey, he has built vast experience in the field of Instructional Design and Design Thinking, working with multinational corporations like Accenture and Deloitte. Subroto holds dual degrees in computer application (BCA) and Arts (B.A.). He also holds a post-graduate degree in computer applications (MCA) from Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU).

Alorika Ray is a Senior Manager of Design at Emeritus, with special interests in learning platforms and the experiential learning journey. Her almost sixteen years in e-learning and instructional design includes varied experience in K-12 and corporate training. She started her career in education as a high school English teacher. Alorika holds a Post-Graduate degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Calcutta and a Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching. She also holds certifications in content curation, digital learning experience design, and learning experience design. Alorika is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Pallavi Gupta, BSc, MSc

Senior Manager of Design, Emeritus

Pallavi Gupta leads a team of instructional designers at Emeritus, helping them to hone their skills and motivating them to experiment with new ideas. She has over 15 years of cross-domain experience, with the majority in content development and design for e-learning. She has worked on a broad range of corporate and educational content, including higher education and K-12. She also has research experience in mathematical modeling using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Support Vector Machines (SVM) techniques, with five papers published in some major national and international journals. Pallavi holds a post-graduate degree in Applied Mathematics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IITR).

Varun Chauhan currently works as a Senior Design Manager with Emeritus in the Learning Design department. He has a long-standing interest in instructional design and multimedia and has worked extensively with a number of top schools like Cambridge University, MIT, Kellogg School of Management, etc. to develop eLearning content. Before venturing into instructional design, he was working for Academy Award winning studios as a visual effects artist. He has contributed to several Oscar winning movies like The Golden Compass, Life of Pi, etc.

Divyavathi is a Manager of LMS in the Design team at Emerritus and handles a team, which includes LMS experts. She has a vast experience of over 16 years. She has experience of working in different sectors like corporate, NGO, and education. Over the years, she has gained her expertise in planning, operations, and development of course content by partnering with diverse professionals. She has been involved with various LMS platforms and trained many associates in LMS. She earned a Masters degree in Computer Application from Pondicherry University, and a postgraduate research degree, M.Phil in Computer Science.

Rebecca Taub has been teaching and collaborating with learning communities to design and deliver accessible and inclusive digital learning experiences and environments for more than two decades. She bridges her professional passion for access and inclusion to her community, where she serves on various committees with the goal of raising awareness and engaging in activities to increase equity and diversity. Rebecca earned a Master’s in Education and Communication from the University of Barcelona, Spain.

Dr. Janet Twyman is an education innovator, thought leader, and founder of blast: A Learning Sciences Company. Her numerous publications and presentations address behavior analysis, instructional design, technology, and educational systems, and includes co-editing three books on educational innovation, personalized learning, and equity. Always passionate about education, Janet has been a pre-school and public school teacher, education administrator, researcher, and university professor. She currently holds a faculty appointment as Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and formerly served as Director of Innovation and Technology for the U.S. Dept of Education funded Center on Innovations in Learning and as Vice President of Instructional Development, Research, & Implementation at Headsprout. She has presented to and worked with education systems, organizations, and institutions over 75 states and countries, including speaking about technologies for diverse learners and settings at the United Nations.

Trafford Judd Head of Global Programs, Revenue Enablement, Asana

Trafford Judd is a sales enablement leader with over 15 years of experience in sales enablement, SaaS and human resources. He currently leads the Revenue Enablement team at Asana (ASAN), providing instructional design, sales training, and program management for Asana's 550-person global revenue team. Asana helps teams orchestrate their work, from small projects to strategic initiatives. Global customers such as Amazon, Japan Airlines, Sky, and Affirm rely on Asana to manage everything from company objectives and digital transformation to product launches and marketing campaigns.

Satang Jow, Head of Learning and Development for R&D, Rapid

Satang has 15 years of experience in Learning and Development. After spending the early years of her career in Telecommunication, she has spent the majority of her time planning, designing and executing strategic company-wide learning initiatives at both Yahoo and Twilio. Through the many years, she has also served in the office of the Chief of Staff and Technical Program Management roles, but her strengths and weaknesses always brought her close to Learning and Development. Her ultimate career goal is to be a teacher and her plan is to relocate to her home country of Gambia to teach at her high school.

Dr. Kubina is a Professor of Special Education at Penn State. After completing his Masters' program, he taught special education in private schools specializing in post-acute brain trauma rehabilitation for three years. During his doctoral program, Kubina worked as a graduate teaching assistant for the Great Lakes Regional Resource Center, a federally funded information dissemination and training center serving the Great Lake states. Currently, he teaches courses on methods for teaching reading, behavior analysis, and single-case design. He conducts wide-ranging research in the area of Applied Behavior Analysis, Precision Teaching, and technology and is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Doctoral level, and serves on several editorial boards for behavioral and special education journals.

    This is a graded program. You will be required to complete a combination of individual assignments, quizzes, and a final project. Each component carries a certain number of points and a cumulative score of 75% is required to pass and obtain your professional certificate.

  • How much time will I be expected to devote to this program?

    Each program includes an estimated learner effort per week. This is referenced at the top of the program landing page under the Duration section, as well as in the program brochure, which you can obtain by submitting the short form at the top of this web page.


    How will I spend my time in this program?

    You will divide your learning time between viewing recorded coding demos, and video lectures, contributing to class discussions, completing assignments, projects, and knowledge checks, and attending optional live sessions with industry experts and program leaders.


    How is the program administered? Can the program be accessed anytime?

    The program is accessed through the custom learning portal. This portal will give you access to all program-related content such as video lectures, assignments, and discussions. Live office hours will be conducted using a webinar tool.

    The video lectures and assignments are accessible weekly throughout the program. In the event you miss a live session, a recording will be made available.


    Do I need to attend live sessions every week?

    Faculty video lectures are recorded, allowing you to watch these on your own schedule. However, participation in optional live sessions and discussion boards is highly encouraged. Live sessions will give you the opportunity to draw on the coding experience of our industry-experienced course leaders to answer your questions and help reach your learning goals. The discussion boards are also an integral part of the learning experience, giving you and your peers the opportunity to learn together, along with guidance from the moderators.


    Can I download the program videos?

    You can download video transcripts, assignment templates, readings, etc. However, the video lectures are only available for streaming and require an internet connection.


    How do I interact with other program participants?

    You can communicate with other participants through our learning platform. You will be able to form groups based on your interests and location. A direct messaging feature is also available through the platform.


    What is it like to learn online with the learning collaborator, Emeritus?

    All the contents of the course would be made available to students at the commencement of the course. However, to ensure the program delivers the desired learning outcomes the students may appoint Emeritus to manage the delivery of the program in a cohort-based manner the cost of which is already included in the overall course fee of the course.

    A dedicated program support team is available 24/5 (Monday to Friday) to answer questions about the learning platform, technical issues, or anything else that may affect your learning experience.

  • What are the requirements to earn the certificate?

    Each program includes an estimated learner effort per week, so you can gauge what will be required before you enrol. This is referenced at the top of the program landing page under the Duration section, as well as in the program brochure, which you can obtain by submitting the short form at the top of this web page. All programs are designed to fit into your working life.

    This program is scored as a pass or no-pass; participants must complete the required activities to pass and obtain the certificate of completion. Some programs include a final project submission or other assignments to obtain passing status. This information will be noted in the program brochure.     What type of certificate will I receive?

    Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive a smart digital certificate. The smart digital certificate can be shared with friends, family, schools, or potential employers. You can use it on your cover letter, resume, and/or display it on your LinkedIn profile.
    The digital certificate will be sent approximately two weeks after the program, once grading is complete.


    Can I get the hard copy of the certificate?

    No, only verified digital certificates will be issued upon successful completion. This allows you to share your credentials on social platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.


    Do I receive alumni status after completing this program?

    No, there is no alumni status granted for this program. In some cases, there are credits that count toward a higher level of certification. This information will be clearly noted in the program brochure.


    How long will I have access to the learning materials?

    You will have access to the learning platform and all program materials (videos excluded) for one full year following the program end date. Access to the learning platform is restricted to registered participants per the terms of agreement.

  • What equipment is needed or the technical requirements for this program?

    To successfully complete this program online, you must have access to a device meeting the minimum requirements, found here. In addition, Microsoft Office or similar product and a PDF viewer are required to access documents, spreadsheets, presentations, PDF files, and transcripts in all programs. Technical programs might have additional tech requirements. Please check the learning platform on the first day of class.


    Do I need to be online to access the program content?

    Yes, the learning platform is accessed via the internet and video content is not available for download. You can download files of video transcripts, assignment templates, readings, etc. Video lectures must be streamed via the internet and webinars and small group sessions will require an internet connection.

  • What is the program fee for the program and what forms of payment do you accept?
